A few weeks ago I decided that I needed a new drivers suit and called a company
in Scottsdale that offers a fine selection of quality drivers Nomex fire suits. I decided
on an attractive one offered by SPARCO, their SPONSOR 5suit, as shown here
I really liked it and ordered one from Pole Position Partners (480) 424-7223 in
Scottsdale.
When the suit arrived, Victor the owner called me to come get it. I went to his
shop in Scottsdale to pick it up. While trying it on I spotted another GREAT looking suit
hanging on their wall. I looked at it more closely and noticed that it had belonged to
"Michael Andretti".
I asked it is was for sale and if I could try it on. Victor said yes, it's for sale. Try it on.
I did and it fit perfectly. Then I asked the price. WOW! I swallowed hard and took it off
quickly and carefully hung it back up.
I finished the purchase of the new SPARCO suit along with a few other driver safety
items and left for home. After I got about 4 blocks down the road I called Victor on
my cel phone and made him what I thought was a ridiculous offer for the handsome
Andretti drivers suit. He said, "I'll take it. Come on back and we'll trade."
I now am the proud owner of "Michael Andretti's" 2001 K-Mart drivers suit.
It was custom trailored for Michael by Momo Corse and is the finest suit of it's type.
A full 3 layer Nomex III fire resistant suit, custom embroidered for Michael with
all their sponsors during that season and race series. (I'm told that the embroidering
alone cost over $1,500.00 aside from the cost of the suit itself.)
In 2002, Michael Andretti extended his CART record by taking his 42nd career Champ
Car victory in Grand Prix of Long Beach. He stands third on the All-Time Champ Car
win list behind his father, Mario, who has 52 career wins, and A.J. Foyt who has 67
career victories. He took his second podium finish of the season with a second place
performance in the Grand Prix of Cleveland. He qualified eighth and finished third in
the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio for his third podium finish of the season and the
97th top-three result of his career. He qualified second for the Rockingham 500, taking
his best starting position since he started second for the 2000 season-ending event
at California Speedway. He qualified fourth and finished second at Fontana after leading
37 laps bringing his total career laps led to a record 6,708.
Currently Michael and his partners have formed, Andretti Green Racing. (AGR) was
founded in 2002 by owners Michael Andretti, Kim Green and Kevin Savoree. Competing
in the Indy Racing League's IndyCar Series, the team also features drivers Dario
Franchitti and Tony Kannan. The 2004 IndyCar Series schedule, which features 16
events, kicks off on Feb. 29 with a 300-mile event at Homestead-Miami Speedway
and then heads back to Phoenix for Round 2 on March 23, 2004 when I plan to go visit
Michael
and get him to autograph my suit for me (if possible)..
