April 1st, 2005 - DRAG RACING
The (2nd) Drag Race for the Shelby since it was completed.
NOTE: the first time I drag raced it I broke the rear end. Go HERE for the story. HA
The Drags Friday night turned out great. Myself and my 4 man pitcrew (Frank, Tom, Curtis
& Denny) all enjoyed the races and the cool desert night was perfect for it. A typical mild
April (Phoenix) desert drag race evening.
I had the Shelby set up to run about 75% Nitrous (125 h.p. set for 8 lbs of fuel pressure) to
kick in @ 3,500 r.p.m.'s and ran it on my everyday Street tires. (I decided not to use the
drag slicks because I had a Car Show early Saturday morning and didn't have time to change
the tires before the show. So I just ran it with the street tires on it.)

I won all (3) of my drag races, against other later model Mustangs. The first was a newer
model Supercharged Mustang GT. I was asleep on the starting line and he got a jump on me at the
start but I caught and passed him for the WIN. Not a great run but it worked out ok.

The 2nd run was against a late Model Mach I which I also won. This was my best run of
the night.

The last run was against a freshly restored 68 Mustang with a 429 Big Block in it.
This was not my best run of the night but I took the win anyway.

Out of 24 Mustangs in our group that ran Friday night, I took the 1st Place Trophy for
LOW E.T. @ 13.08 and also took the 1st Place Trophy for Top Speed at 112.95.
Needless to say I was pleased with the end results. Knowing that my Shelby is even more
capable of lower E.T's by leaning the fuel mixture down to 6 lbs. and using drag slicks
for better traction. Which I will do next time.
Not too bad considering it spun the tires all the way thru the first 3 gears and really didn't get good
traction until I hit 4th gear on the top end. I'm guessing it may be capable of achieving e.t's
in the very low 12's with the correct set-up. I'll get there eventually. It's lots of fun trying! :)
UPDATE (4/7/05)
I just finished completely re-plumbing all the fuel system, adding a dedicated fuel line,
pressure gauge and regulator for the fuel to Nitrous feed line and I have now dialed
the pressure down to 5.5 lbs (where it should be). I also installed a really kool
"purge" system for the Nitrous as well. What fun!

Notice the small "purge" tube between the hood and the cow. Here is the new "purge"
button I added inside. (I know, I need to clean the rubber shifter boot!)
UPDATE
Saturday Night Drags
(4/30/05)
I got a new set of 235/60/15 Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radials mounted up and
the car was all ready to go try it again. Nitrous bottles filled, everything was
ready to go race so my pit crew and I headed for Speedworld Drag strip on the
West side of Phoenix since it has a reputation for having the best traction in
the state of Arizona.

We arrived at Speedworld, got the car tech'd and I was the first car in the staging
lanes ready to run. A deep rumbling Black '95 Mustang Cobra with a young driver
in it pulled along side me and appeared eager to give someone a challenge. This
old man was ready. (Meaning ME of course.) Ha!
We both pulled to the line after very smoky burn-outs to warm up the tires,
both cars snorting, flames blowing out below, and hissing sounds of Nitrous.
He staged and then I staged. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye.
4 yellow lights started their count down and I launched the Shelby! She
jumped out ahead, the shift light flashed yellow as the motor reached 6,000
rpm, I grabbed second and on thru 3rd and 4th.
I never saw him again!
12.963 seconds later I crossed the finish line at 111.862 m.p.h. taking
the WIN light.

Naturally I was elated that I had finally broken into the 12 second bracket.
Not by much but I didn't figure that was too bad for a car I've driven to
Nashville, TN and San Diego and got 16 mpg, or to the grocery store or out for a
leisure cruise to get a hamburger. With Air/Conditioning and Power Windows. Ha
Details of how the car was setup for that run:
* Full tank of gas
* Spare tire in
* Electric exhaust cut-outs OPEN
* 3 degrees of timing retard dialed into the timing retard box
* Nitrous (jetted for) 125 h.p shot
* Nitrous Window Switch set to turn on Nitrous at 4,100 rpm
* Holly 670 Street Avenger Vacuum Secondaries
* Gas/Fuel pressure to carb (regular line, 7 lbs)
* Gas/Fuel for Nitrous fuel line 5.5 lbs
* Full 10 lb bottle of Nitrous @ 900 psi
* Shift light set @ 6,000 rpm
* Front tires @ 39 lbs
* MT drag radials @ 24 lbs
(no water box- due to treaded tires- did a dry burnout)
E.T 12.963 @ 111.862 m.p.h
